The Maine Harvest Company
The Maine Harvest Company, LLC will be a food aggregation and processing facility located in the Brunswick/Topsham, Maine area focusing on lightly processing and freezing produce in an effort to create greater value for producers and increase access to healthy local foods year round for consumers.
We plan to source from a six county area, including: York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Androscoggin, Kennebec, and Lincoln Counties.
Maine Harvest Company has gotten off to a slow start, as we work to raise the last bit of financing we need and continue to research the best possible operating models with the help of experts and experienced food processors throughout the U.S. We will be looking for farmers interested in processing their green beans, edamame (soy beans), tomatoes, peppers, onions, butternut squash, zucchini/summer squash and pumpkin to work with us as we move forward and we will be offering co-packing services for products like seaweed, various berries, hearty winter greens (kale, collards, mustard greens) and other products we haven't thought of yet. If you have a co-packing need, please get in touch and we'll see what we can do... We are also here to help with crop planning and budgeting to help farmers put more land into production, creating a new stream of revenue in addition to their current operations, and/or to help new farmers get started!
As the business grows, MHC will continue to bring new equipment online to help expand our list of services and products. We will also be developing a shared equipment resource to help farmers put more acreage into production and reduce the capital cost of equipment for smaller producers.
We will offer three service lines:
1. Co-packing Service – A processing service whereby producers may retain ownership of their produce and can pay a fee for service and receive a value-added product to offer their existing customers
2. Retail and Premium Line – A processing service where the Maine Harvest Company will purchase first quality produce, aggregate, process and repack to enable smaller producers to enter larger retail markets such as Hannaford and Whole Foods with a co-branded (MHC and the farm) value-added retail product
3. Seconds and Wholesale Line – A wholesale service where the facility will purchase second quality produce to aggregate and process under their own label in order to enable smaller
farmers to serve larger markets such as institutions and schools, as well as regional distributors, while capturing value from produce that is currently being composted or fed to the pigs, representing an entirely new income stream for the producer
The Maine Harvest Company, LLC will be privately owned and operated.
